During my childhood, my parents, siblings and I lived on a three-acre "mini" farm, along with one or two cows and 100 chickens. Scattered over our home place were many oak trees, and my mother enjoyed growing vegetables and flowers. Compost piles made from decaying leaves and cow manure provided nutrients for these plants. My mother grew so many vegetables that I earned pocket money by selling them to the neighbors.
Neighbors and friends would say, "Mrs. Crook has a green thumb. Her vegetables grow better than anybody else." I can't recall my mother spraying insecticides, weed killers or other chemicals in our garden.

I walked to school a mile away. I skated, rode my pony or my bicycle after school, and during the summer, I played tennis, baseball and other sports. (We had a tennis court and a small baseball "diamond" on our back lot.) In addition, I had to do chores like cutting the grass and raking leaves, so I spent a lot of time outdoors.
Few automobiles came down the road to pollute the air with lead and other toxic substances contained in automobile exhaust. Houses were made out of wood or brick and heated by radiators and wood fires. Clothing and home furnishings were made from natural fabrics that didn't put out offensive odors. When I was growing up, we ate good food and breathed clean air.
I don't want life to sound perfect, because it wasn't. Family members, friends and neighbors experienced health problems almost unheard of today. One of my sisters almost died with typhoid fever, and a brother almost died with pneumonia. Scarlet fever, measles and other childhood diseases caused death and disability in many people. So did diphtheria, "lock jaw" (tetanus) and polio.
During the past 75 years, amazing, fantastic and breathtaking changes have taken place. Because of advances in medicine, many lives have been saved and much suffering has been prevented or relieved. Although women in the 21st century are living longer than their grandmothers and great-grandmothers, they're developing more chronic complaints, including vaginitis, PMS, fatigue, endometriosis, depression, digestive disorders, respiratory problems, urinary problems, weight problems, food and chemical sensitivities, osteoporosis, cancer and other problems.
CAUSES OF CHEMICAL AND MOLD SENSITIVITIES
Why are people developing these problems? Here are some of the reasons:
- nutritionally deficient diets loaded with sugar, white flour and unhealthy fats
- they're taking in antibiotics - not only those prescribed by their physicians - but antibiotics in animal foods and dairy products
- prescription drugs of many types
- chemicals of all sorts inside and outside our homes
If your health problems are "yeast-related," even though you change your diet, take antifungal medication and nutritional supplements, you may continue to experience problems because chemicals and molds in your home can be two of the biggest contributors to your health problems.
Chemicals
Hazardous and potentially hazardous chemicals have been around for decades - even centuries. After the Great Depression in the 1930s and after World War II in the 1940s, Americans fell in love with chemicals. More and more were developed each year and were hailed as signs of "progress." Here are a few of them:

- Lead and other additives were added to the gasoline of our growing number of automobiles because they helped the cars run better.
- DDT and other insecticides were sprayed in our homes and other places because people felt they helped get rid of "pesky" insects.
- Weed killers and insecticides were sprayed on the soil and crops of our farms because these chemicals seemed to help farmers raise more food to feed our growing population and export to other countries.
- Protective coatings were added to upholstered furniture and carpets to prevent stains and simplify cleanup.
