Overgrowth Of Yeast On Skin - Success Story (Part 2)

Overgrowth Of Yeast On Skin

Everything changed the day I went to a bookstore and found Yeast Infection No More. The moment I opened the book, I recognized myself: The depression, mood swings, irritability, severe PMS, crying for no reason, needing a nap in the middle of the day.

I finally got serious about the Yeast-Fighting Program during the first week in March and I started visiting this blog, where I found lots more information and the support of people who are going through similar health crises.

Within days of really eliminating yeast, I felt like a different person! I started losing weight at a very good pace. In just two months, the change in my mood was like night and day. I didn't feel depressed at all. For nearly 20 years, depression was like a black cloud in my head all the time. It just went away. It's not there anymore!

How To Treat Yeast Overgrowth

All this talk about weight loss is intellectual until you see it applied to someone who is a real example and an inspiration. Let me introduce you to Michelle, a 37-year old woman who works as a caregiver at a training school for the developmentally disabled. She is also a budding artist. Michelle, who successfully utilized the Yeast-Fighting Program, generously, openly and honestly shares her dramatic story below.

MICHELLE'S STORY

I've spent most of my adult life profoundly depressed. I can trace it back now to the time I got my first urinary tract infection (UTI) right after I graduated from high school. Of course, my doctor put me on antibiotics. And I got more of the same every time I got another UTI - which has been about three times a year for nearly 20 years now. The doctors decided I had a short urethra and recommended surgery, but I resisted.

When I was in college, I was very depressed and unmotivated, despite my passion for my major, art. I just couldn't seem to concentrate and seemed to be walking around in a fog all the time. I couldn't keep up my studies, so I dropped out after two years.

Treating Yeast Overgrowth - Get The Weight Off

Treating Yeast Overgrowth

Over the years, as I treated thousands of patients with yeast problems, I also observed that most of them had weight problems. For many of these patients, their excess weight was the least of their worries, since they suffered from chronic fatigue, persistent headaches, endometriosis, brain fog and a host of other serious health problems.

Yet almost without exception, those who needed to lose weight found that the weight melted off with the Yeast-Fighting Program.

Treating Yeast Overgrowth

These days, I am hearing from women with diet-resistant excess weight who ask for my recommendations for weight loss strategies that work. Many of these women - perhaps you are among them - do not have overwhelming symptoms of yeast overgrowth. They've just found it nearly impossible to lose weight or keep it off. I believe many of these women may, in fact, have Crook's Candidiasis.

HORMONE IMBALANCE AND IMPAIRED METABOLISM

Toxins from yeast overgrowth create allergic responses, and trigger hormone imbalance. Some of these toxic byproducts, or pseudohormones, can over-stimulate or "jam" hormone receptor sites, causing weight gain and mood swings that for many people lead to binge eating. When your hormones are out of control:

How To Treat Candida Overgrowth

  • Your metabolism is impaired, slowing the calorie-burning process, adding weight and making it more difficult to lose weight;
  • Your immune system suffers as more toxins begin to circulate in your system, increasing the toxic overload and the allergic response; and
  • Your blood sugar control is impaired and high blood sugar feeds the yeast even more.

LEAKY GUT SYNDROME

You already know about leaky gut syndrome, but let me explain how this syndrome relates to weight gain.

Leaky gut syndrome takes place when the Candida albicans yeast in the digestive tract overwhelms the protective healthy bacteria by burrowing into the now-unguarded intestinal wall. This in turn creates tiny gaps in the membrane lining, through which partially digested food particles and the 180 toxic byproducts of yeast may be absorbed into your bloodstream and thus reach every part of your body.

Leaky gut can cause all kinds of seemingly unrelated illnesses, from bladder infections to psoriasis to depression and more. These toxins then create an allergic response that stimulates:

Any medication that can potentially cause gastrointestinal ulcerations or inflammation and weaken the lining of the gut can allow candida to gain a stronger and deeper foothold ... While candida thrives on it, sugar weakens our immune system. It decreases the ability of white blood cells, phagocytes in particular, to engulf unwanted organisms ...

Typically in patients with chronic sinusitis, the primary causes are:
  1. repeated broad-spectrum antibiotics, along with
  2. a sugarfilled diet and
  3. significant emotional stress.

Candida Overgrowth Symptoms

Sinusitis follows on the heels of asthma and allergies. In fact, it's closely connected and, I suspect, yeast plays just as important a part in the aggravating symptoms of sinusitis.

Almost 32 million Americans suffer from chronic sinusitis. That's 16.3% of the population and I was surprised to learn the majority of the sufferers are women.

Candida Overgrowth Symptoms

I've been interested in sinusitis since my medical school days. AIthough I enjoyed excellent health, I was bothered by a stuffy nose and mucus in the back of my throat. Although I tried various therapies, I was bothered by these problems until I visited internist/allergist Theron Randolph in Chicago in the mid-1990s.

I was unusually healthy as an infant and young child. My mother tells me I was rarely sick and I wasn't troubled by allergies. During my teen years, I was bothered by menstrual cramps - nothing unusual. I married early and my son was born when I was 19. No significant problems on through my 20s except for moderate menstrual problems and occasional yeast infections.

Four years ago, I married again and beginning three years ago, my husband and I decided we would like to have a child. Although we used no contraceptives, nothing happened.

What Is Candida Overgrowth - CFIDS

What Is Candida Overgrowth

Many physicians, including researchers, think viruses cause CFIDS. For a time it was thought that the Epstein-Barr virus was the culprit. Yet, laboratory and other studies showed this was not the case, even though in many people, CFIDS develops suddenly following a viral infection. In other individuals, it seems to come on more gradually.

As I read the reports in the medical and lay literature about CFIDS, it seemed to me that the symptoms in many people with this illness were similar to those experienced by my patients with yeast-related problems.

RHEUMATOID ARTHRITIS

Rheumatoid arthritis is an autoimmune disease that involves inflammation in the lining of the joints. The inflamed joint lining, called the synovium, can invade and damage bone and cartilage, resulting in pain, stiffness and swelling.

Rheumatoid arthritis affects about 2.1 million Americans, 1.5 million of them women. Interestingly, recent studies from Harvard's Brigham and Women's Hospital in Boston shows that women with rheumatoid arthritis have about twice the risk of a heart attack as women without the disease. Researchers theorize the link is because of the inflammation that is present with arthritis and is thought to contribute to the fatty build up in blood vessels, one of the known causes of heart attacks.

Candida Yeast Overgrowth - Hypothyroidism

Low thyroid function can be another cause of that "tired all over" feeling. Hypothyroidism is ten times more common in women than in men and thyroid dysfunction complicates 5-9% of all pregnancies.

Symptoms

The Thyroid Foundation of America notes:

With severe hypothyroidism, you may begin to feel run down, slow, depressed, sluggish, cold, tired and may lose interest in normal daily activities. Other symptoms may include dryness and brittleness of hair, dry and itchy skin, constipation, muscle cramps and increased menstrual flow in women.

At several conferences I attended on chronic fatigue syndrome, professionals discussing this disorder expressed varying points of view, and different treatments were recommended. The general consensus seemed to be that FMS and CFIDS were closely related - if not the same disorder.

I met Kristen Thorsen, president of the American Fibromyalgia Association, at a conference in California about 10 years ago. Since then, we have corresponded and talked on the phone a number of times. She says, "FMS could be another name for CFIDS ... or vice versa ... depending on which diagnosis you happen to have." Because of her own problems with FMS, for a number of years she's published Fibromyalgia Network, a newsletter for people with FMS/CFIDS.

In an article, "Fibromyalgia - An Emerging But Controversial Condition," Don L. Goldenberg, M.D., of the Tufts University School of Medicine in Boston, described the symptoms, laboratory findings and treatment results of 118 patients with fibromyalgia. Here are excerpts from his article:

Fibromyalgia is one of the most common diagnoses in ambulatory practice. Recent estimates of the instance of fibromyalgia in the United States have ranged from 3 to 6 million ... Common symptoms noted in our series and other recent reports have included neck and shoulder pain, morning stiffness, sleep disturbances and fatigue.

If you are tired, so tired and add the "sick all over" complaint to the laundry list of your health problems, it's likely you've been from doctor to doctor with no real help and probably one or more of those doctors has suggested, "It's all in your head."

It may be in your head, but it's probably also in your reproductive tract, your digestive tract, your joints and muscles, and just about everywhere in your body.

Chronic fatigue syndrome, fibromyalgia and hypothyroidism, disorders that have received a great deal of attention in recent years, are each typified by a huge list of symptoms for which there are few real remedies.

Symptoms Of Candida Yeast Overgrowth - Depression

Symptoms Of Candida Yeast Overgrowth

Approximately 19 million Americans suffer from clinical depression, and two-thirds of them are women. Nearly 15 years ago, when I decided to review the records of 100 of my patients with yeast-related conditions, I was surprised at the results: depression, fatigue and headache were the most common complaints. What's more, 85% of these patients were women and most of them were between the ages of 30 and 45.

I had listened to these patients. I knew that the multiple health problems typical of people with candidiasis could become overwhelming, but those numbers gave me enough of a jolt to deepen my search for the link between depression and Candida albicans.

WHAT CAUSES VULVODYNIA?

There are a number of theories about the cause of vulvodynia. Among those listed by the National Vulvodynia Association:
  • an injury to, or irritation of, the nerves surrounding the vulva
  • an abnormal response of different cells in the vulva to environmental factors (such as infection or trauma)
  • genetic factors associated with susceptibility to chronic vestibular inflammation
  • a localized hypersensitivity to candida (yeast)
  • spasms of the muscles that support the pelvic organs
Others, myself included, believe many cases, perhaps one-third or more, of vulvodynia can be one symptom of a systemic yeast overgrowth.

You may never have heard the term vulvodynia, but many of you recognize the symptoms: burning pain, stabbing pain, itching, stinging and irritation around the vulva, often accompanied by a white cheesy discharge. One patient described her external genitalia as "bright red," and another said it "feels like it's on fire."

The pain can come suddenly, seemingly from nowhere. It may be constant or intermittent. It may take place only during sexual intercourse. For some women, it is more pronounced near their time of their menstrual periods.

Frequently, the area around the vagina shows no redness or swelling or infection, in spite of these intense symptoms. The pain can involve the entire area, including the rectal or anal skin and may include hypersensitivity around the small labia, making it difficult to walk. Other women may experience discomfort when their pubic hair is touched, making it difficult for them to wear underwear. Occasionally women also experience a painful or hypersensitive clitoris.

Sometimes, in fact, many times, dedicated, caring, persistent people can advance the frontiers of medicine more than physicians and other "experts." Mary Lou Ballweg, who co-founded the Endometriosis Association (EA) with Carolyn Keith in 1980, is one of those people. Herself a victim of what she calls "this painful, chronic and stubborn disease," Ballweg has devoted her tireless efforts to informing women and health care professionals about endometriosis and offering support to the millions of women who are suffering from the disease.

"Endometriosis is a disease affecting an estimated 5 million women in the U.S. and millions more worldwide. It is a nightmare of misinformation, myths, taboos, lack of diagnosis and problematic hit-and-miss treatments overlaid on a painful, chronic, stubborn disease," says Ballweg, who serves as the Association's president.
