KOLOREX
Some say this natural product from New Zealand is as effective as nystatin. It's made from anise seed and a leaf called horopito (Pseudowintera colorata), a relative of the cayenne pepper, that work together to restore microbial balance in the gastrointestinal tract.

Forest Herbs Research of New Zealand, the manufacturer of Kolorex, explains how it works:
The main active component in horopito is polygodial, but at least three other natural antifungal compounds are present in the leaves.
The anticandida effect of polygodial is increased 32 times by the addition of anethol, the main active of anise seed. Anise seed (aniseed) is a traditional medicinal herb in its place of origin - South America.
In addition to its antifungal properties, horopito also contains the powerful antioxidant flavonoids - quercetin and taxifolin.
According to Irv Rosenberg, Ph.D., a nutritional pharmacist at the Apothecary in Bethesda, Maryland, this product is as effective as nystatin. Dr. Rosenberg sent me a copy of an article by Arnold Fox, M.D., entitled "Koloreya The New Cure for Candida." Here are excerpts:
From New Zealand comes a successful easy-to-use, nontoxic and natural product that effectively treats candida infections ... Kolorex damages the cellular walls of Candida albicans (as well as other yeasts). With their walls ruptured, candida's cellular material leaks out and the organism dies. Kolorex kills candida more rapidly and effectively than most medicines.
Dr. Rosenberg, who has been counseling yeast patients for the past 19 years, said he believes Kolorex kills candida more rapidly and effectively than most medicines.
Dr, Rosenberg tells me he prescribes one dose a day for five days in order to lessen the amount of die-off reaction. Then, he recommends taking it twice a day for 8-12 weeks.
The company recommends taking Kolorex with food and a full glass of water. The product comes packaged with separate capsules of horopito and anise. Kolorex also comes as a cream for vaginal yeast infections. It is available through the company's website at www.kolorex.com.
CAPRYLIC ACID
This substance, a natural occurring fatty acid, was first studied some 40 years ago by Dr, Irene Neuhauser of the University of Illinois, who found that it had antifungal activity. Since it is readily absorbed, patients should take time-released or enteric-coated formulas to allow for a gradual release throughout the entire intestinal tract. Because caprylic acid is a food product, it's available without a prescription.
Caprylic acid is produced by the body in small quantities and can be extracted from plant fats, such as coconut oil and palm oil. Some research suggests it interferes with the growth and reproductive processes in the yeast organisms.
It usually requires three to four months of taking caprylic acid, 1,000 to 2,000 mg. three times a day with meals to get results. Many physicians will suggest starting at a somewhat lesser dosage, 500 mg. once or twice a day, to avoid the discomfort of massive die-off, then increasing the dosage gradually to the maximum recommended dose.
During the past decade, a number of health professionals have found that caprylic acid products are effective in controlling candida in the intestinal tract.
GARLIC
Garlic has been widely used for medicinal purposes for centuries. For example, Virgil and Hippocrates mention it as a remedy for pneumonia and snakebite. In looking through the Index Medicus, I found numerous articles from American and foreign literature describing the inhibitory action of garlic on candida organisms.
In studies carried out several years ago, Dr. Benjamin Lau of Loma Linda University, Loma Linda, California, reported on the effectiveness of Kyolic-aged garlic extract against Candida albicans infections in mice. According to Dr. Lau, this study suggests that the garlic extract strengthens the immune system by helping the body's white blood cells gobble up enemy germs.

As you probably know, many different garlic products, including odor-free garlic, are available from health food stores. Like the various automobile makers, each company describes the features of its garlic products. Which preparations are best? I don't know. Yet, I've been impressed by reports that document the quality of Kyolic-aged garlic extract. More than 200 peer-reviewed studies have confirmed its efficacy.
